http://www.brc.org.uk/showDoc04.asp?id=3755&moid=6164 reports doom and gloom in the High Street, with heavy discounting and actual declines in retail sales for the first time in decades in many sectors. But it also reports a 16.6% growth in non-store (online and direct) sales, which reflects the experience and reports of many retailers in the news. Even more interesting is the estimate that only 4% of all retail sales are non-store. This shows that there’s still a massive opportunity for growth in online selling. Channel shift, which has all but eliminated High Street travel agents for example, continues with major retailers like Clarks shoes launching online stores, and more and more people checking online, and buying if the offering is a good one.
That being the case, e-commerce continues to look like a good prospect, even in a shrinking economy.
